About Awards & Conference...
WL- Writer's Legacy (formerly MDLC) began as a vision in 1999, when local literary venues lacked and the illiteracy rate climbed. With few avenues for the vast amount of talent contained in the Greater Detroit area, it became a reality in 2004. A group of literary entrepreneurs were lead to pursue avenues in which to further educate, promote and strengthen local writers and publishers. WL also felt a need to contribute to young women in the community by providing assistance to those wanting to improve reading and writing skills. Through the program and a desire to aid in community service, Write On Workshop for Teen Girls was birthed.
AWARDS- The Legacy Awards is Detroit's only awards banquet to pay tribute to Literary Entrepreneurs (Self-Publishers), who are only starting to gain the true recognition and professional courtesy that has been long overdue. The popularity of these talented artists, has prompted large publishing houses to give birth to smaller imprints within the company to address the work of Multi-Cultural publishers. Still a lot of hard work has not been recognized. This annual event continues to do what hasn't been done in the Midwest by recognizing the small and independent publisher and those making contributions to Metro Detroit and the small publishing industry. They will be honored here among peers (novice and veteran) and industry professionals. They will receive this night, the "Legacy Award" that acknowledges the hard work, great effort and time put into a work to give it life. This annual event is one we hope will continue to grow.
CONFERENCE- The main focus of this industry is; doing the work, getting it right and encouraging others. Producing positive literary events and creating great works are just some of the goals that Writer's Legacy strives for. It is our sincere hope that we can make a difference in the fight to increase literacy in our communities, thereby boosting morale and positive productivity. We further seek to offer writers, readers and industry professionals a conducive venue for networking that will provide education, entertainment, empowerment and a source by which people will be inspired in their literary careers. Industry professionals will be on hand to offer advice and discounts on their products and services that are of value to conference attendees.
HOPE FOR THE FUTURE... It is our hope and desire that we are able to not only support and uplift the authors and writers in Michigan, but that we will be able to introduce literary programs in our community that will help assist teenage mothers, underserved women and ex convicts by allowing them access to the means by which they will become more confident. In bolstering that confidence and intelligence affording them the opportunity to make choices for their future and become productive members of society.
